How Often Should You Mow Kikuyu?

19 August 20264 min read

Kikuyu is one of the fastest-growing lawn varieties in Sydney. Without regular mowing it can quickly become overgrown and invasive.

Kikuyu is loved for its toughness, fast recovery and bright green colour. It is commonly used in Sydney backyards, sports fields and sloped areas because it establishes quickly and handles wear. The downside is that all that vigour means frequent mowing.

In spring and summer, Kikuyu can need mowing every 7 to 10 days. During peak growth in warm, wet conditions, a weekly cut is often necessary to keep it at a manageable height. In autumn, every 10 to 14 days is usually enough, and in winter growth slows to a crawl, so mowing once every three to four weeks may suffice.

The ideal mowing height for Kikuyu is 25 to 40 millimetres. Mowing lower can scalp the lawn and expose the runners, while letting it grow too tall creates a thatchy, uneven surface. Because Kikuyu spreads by runners, regular mowing also helps keep it out of garden beds and paths.

A sharp mower blade is essential. Kikuyu leaves are coarse, and dull blades tear rather than cut, leaving the lawn looking brown at the tips. Pair regular mowing with seasonal fertilising and deep watering, and Kikuyu will reward you with a tough, lush lawn.
