How to Trim a Murraya Hedge

19 August 20265 min read

Murraya hedges reward regular, light trimming with dense growth and sweet spring fragrance. This guide covers the best timing, tools and technique for Sydney gardens.

Murraya (Murraya paniculata), also known as orange jasmine, is one of Sydney's favourite hedging plants. It grows quickly, clips cleanly and produces clusters of fragrant white flowers when allowed to mature. The key to a beautiful Murraya hedge is little-and-often trimming rather than heavy renovation cuts.

The best time to trim Murraya in Sydney is late spring and early autumn. A light trim after the spring flowering flush encourages a second burst of growth and keeps the hedge compact. Avoid hard cutting in winter when growth is slow, as the plant can look bare for months.

Use sharp hedge shears or a powered hedge trimmer with clean blades. Start by trimming the top flat, then work the sides down in smooth, sweeping strokes. Murraya responds well to tapering: make the base slightly wider than the top so sunlight reaches the lower branches and the hedge stays full from the ground up.

Feed after trimming with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser and water deeply if the weather is dry. Mulch around the roots to keep the soil cool and suppress weeds. With the right care, a Murraya hedge will stay dense, green and sweetly scented for years.
