Lilly Pilly 'Resilience'

Syzygium australe 'Resilience'

Lilly Pilly is Australia's go-to native hedge. With its dense habit, rapid growth and bronze-to-crimson flush of new leaves, it creates a lush privacy screen in just a couple of seasons. We select psyllid-resistant varieties and shape them from planting so the hedge stays thick right to the ground.

[ About ]

Lilly Pilly 'Resilience' at a glance

A dense Australian native hedge suited to privacy screening and larger boundary planting. Bred specifically to resist psyllid insects that cause leaf blistering on other lilly pilly varieties

A hardy native screen with colourful new growth, perfect for privacy hedging across the North Shore.

Worth knowing

A larger pot gives you a more established starting plant — not an instant hedge. Final density depends on spacing, the nursery batch and care in the first season.

How to look after it

  1. 01Tip prune young plants regularly to promote dense basal growth.
  2. 02Apply native-friendly fertiliser in spring and autumn for strong colour.
  3. 03Keep soil moist during the first two summers; Lilly Pillies hate drying out young.
  4. 04Shape twice yearly for formal hedges, once for relaxed screens.
  5. 05Choose a psyllid-resistant cultivar to avoid leaf pimple damage.

What to look out for

The most common issues we see on Lilly Pilly 'Resilience' hedges around Sydney — how to spot them early, and what to do about them.

Lilly pilly psyllid damage on hedge foliage
Spring – summer

Lilly pilly psyllid

Signs: Dimples and raised pimples across the soft bronze-red new growth — the classic Lilly Pilly problem, worst on susceptible varieties.

Remedy: Prune off affected flushes and dispose of them, feed to push clean growth, and spray new tips with horticultural oil as they emerge. Our psyllid-resistant varieties largely avoid it.

Aphids damage on hedge foliage
Spring

Aphids

Signs: Clusters of tiny green or black insects on the tender shoot tips, curling the new leaves and leaving sticky honeydew.

Remedy: Blast off with a hose or spray with insecticidal soap in the early morning; encourage ladybirds rather than blanket spraying.

Scale & sooty mould damage on hedge foliage
Year-round

Scale & sooty mould

Signs: Brown bumps along Lilly Pilly stems followed by a black sooty film on the leaves below, often where the hedge is densest.

Remedy: Oil spray the stems to smother scale, then wash foliage clean. A light thinning prune opens the hedge up so the mould doesn't resettle.
